The Bakhtiari of Iran - Photos and links

Welcome to my page. My name is Ali and I am from Iran. I am from one of the small language groups. My goal in making this site is help people in Iran to be proud of their minority languages.

به سايت من خوش آمديد. اسم من علي است. من به يكي از گروه‌هاي كوچك زباني در ايران تعلق دارم. اين سايت طراحي شده است تا به مردم كمك كند از زبان و گويش خود احساس سربلندي نمايند.

The Bakhtiari live mainly in Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari province and though Farsi is their language of commerce they speak Bakhtiari at home. This is not Luri language but many people say it is since some Bakhtiari people call their language Lur. Many Bakhtiari people still live in black goat hair tents and are nomads. They migrate in search of water and food for their animals. The Bakhtiari language is part of the Persian family of languages and is not Turkic.

بختياري‌ها عمدتاً در استان چهار محال بختياري زندگي مي‌كنند. اگر چه فارسي، زبان رسمي مي‌باشد اما آنها در منزل به زبان بختياري صحبت مي‌كنند. چون بسياري از مردم بختياري زبان خودشان را لُري مي‌نامند، بعضي آن را با لُري لرستاني اشتباه مي‌گيرند. بسياري از مردم بختياري هنوز زندگي كوچ‌نشيني داشته و در سياه چادرهاي بافته شده از پشم بز زندگي مي‌كنند. آنها در جستجوي آب و غذا براي حيواناتشان از نقطه‌اي به نقطة ديگر كوچ مي‌كنند. زبان بختياري به خانوادة زبان‌هاي فارسي تعلق دارد و نه تركي.

This is the information about this language from the year 2000 edition of the book Ethnologue :

- LURI [LRI] 4,280,000 in Iran (1993) including 680,000 Bakhtiari (1989). Population total all countries 4,280,000 or more. Alternate names: LUR, LOR, LORI. Dialects: LURI, FEYLI, LEKI (LAKI, ALAKI), BAKHTIARI, KELHURI. Classification: Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Iranian, Western, Southwestern, Luri. Closely related to Kumzari. Bilingualism in Farsi. Ethnic groups: Lor, Bakhtiari (Haftlang, Chaharlang), Mamasani (perhaps 75,000 in 1982), Bovir-Ahmadi and Kuhgiluyeh (200,000 in 1982). Posht-Kuh: nomadic, Pish-Kuh: agriculturalists, Bakhtiari Haft-Lang: nomadic pastoralists: sheep, Bakhtiari Cahr-Lang: settled. Shi'a Muslim. Also spoken in Iraq where it is closely related to Kumzari of Oman.
